The SafarisBelow are details and prices of wildlife safaris currently offered by Wild West.
Red deer safariOn this trip we head up Glengarry to loch Quoich to look for the herds of red deer which roam the hills. From November to May they are usually close to the road giving great photo opportunities. October brings the rutting season during which the stags compete to mate with the hinds. At other times of year, they may be higher up the hill but we can often observe them with a good spotting scope. Mon & Thurs 1.30 pm. Approx 2 1/2 hours Watch a video of red deer in Glengarry
Loch Garry bird lifeLoch Garry has been designated a Special Protection Area due to it’s breeding populations of black throated diver and common scoter, two of Britain’s rarest birds. Widgeon and pochard are also regularly sighted. In the winter, whooper swans and goldeneye ducks visit the loch. Osprey have recently returned to the glen Mon & Thurs 10.00 am. Approx 2 hrs
Loch Lochy & Loch ArkaigOsprey and sea eagles have bred successfully on Lochs Lochy and Arkaig in recent years and we regularly see them fishing on the lochs. The Allt Mhuic nature reserve is a stronghold of the chequered skipper butterfly, one of the UK’s rarest species. Tues & Fri, 9.30 am. Approx 2 1/2 hours
Glengarry half day safariWe start off with a look at the bird life on Loch Garry where we may see black & red throated diver, scoter and widgeon as well as many other common species. Further on we'll be Tues & Fri 1.00 pm Approx 4 hours
Glengarry full day safariThis trip starts off as the half day trip but goes all the way out to Kinloch Hourn where we will meet up with Billy McKenzie and his boat Rowan11 for a trip along loch Hourn. Here we will expect to see seals, porpoises, oyster catchers, herons & many other sea birds. We may also spot otters or, very occasionally, dolphins. Weather permitting we will land at Barrisdale in the middle of the great Knoydart wilderness. The boat trip is dependant on weather as even in the summer strong winds can make the loch unsafe. In this event, the programme will be amended and instead we will go for a walk along Loch Hourn to visit the ruins of the old fishing village of Skiary. Wednesday 09.30 approx 7 hours
Other informationTrips normally leave from South Laggan where there is ample car parking. Other local pick up points can be arranged. Most trips involve some short, easy walking. Binoculars and spotting scope are available on the minibus for client use Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult Well behaved dogs are welcome by arrangement but MUST be kept on a lead when out of the vehicle/boat Bookings are essential The species listed are an example of those regularly seen on “Wild West” trips.
